How to Self-Host Nextcloud
Nextcloud is a self-hosted file sync and collaboration platform with sharing, calendars, contacts, and office apps on storage you control. The notes below were checked against the project site and source repository.
When Nextcloud is a good fit
Choose Nextcloud when a team needs shared files and groupware on disks you administer. It is a long-lived application with a database, a data directory, and optional apps. You own upgrades, backups, and client compatibility. Read the current install instructions before selecting a version, because supported PHP, database, and app versions move together.
Deployment notes
The server repository is the PHP application. Nextcloud documents a manual server install and a separate All-in-One container stack for Docker. Pick one documented path and stay on it. All-in-One bundles the database, reverse proxy, and optional office components; a manual install means you provide the web server, PHP, and database yourself.
Put the site behind HTTPS with the public URL you will keep. Changing the URL later touches every desktop and mobile client.
Data and recovery
Back up the data directory and the database together. Files without the database, or a database without the files, will not restore a consistent instance. Include config.php, because it holds the instance secrets.
Write down the restore sequence, required secrets, exposed ports, and installed apps. A scheduled backup is not complete until a clean host can restore it and pass a functional check.
Important limitation
Skip-version upgrades and unmaintained apps are the usual way a Nextcloud instance breaks. Follow the documented upgrade path and read the release notes first.
Production checklist
- Pin and record the deployed version.
- Persist every documented data and configuration path.
- Terminate TLS at a maintained reverse proxy or trusted tunnel.
- Restrict administrative interfaces and rotate default credentials.
- Monitor uptime, disk space, certificate expiry, and failed jobs.
- Test an off-host backup with a real restore.
